General Questions

Who can use the HPER Building?

Students can use the HPER building and the UREC Fitness Center in the Union for free. Faculty, staff, and active Arkansas Alumni Association members can use UREC Facilities if they purchase a UREC membership.  They can also purchase a membership for their Partner/Spouse and children under the age of 26 that reside in their home.

Why do I have to show my University or UREC member ID to get into the HPER Building and UREC Fitness Center?

This allows that only UREC members and their guests are entering the facility, while also maintaining the crucial security measures that ensure the safety of patrons and other employees within the HPER building and UREC Fitness Center. While showing your ID before entering the building may seem redundant or a nuisance, it is quite necessary. The HPER building and UREC Fitness Center are service-oriented facilties to the entire University community and can only maintain the quality of service by supplementing revenues. Thousands of people enter the facilities each year, which makes it particularly difficult to differentiate between members and non-members. The electronic ID system makes this process easier, as the facility and equipment are limited to paying customers only. Since the HPER and UREC Fitness Center only have University affiliated members, it is very important to make sure that the people that pay for the services are the ones receiving them.

How many hours does a student need to be enrolled in to use the HPER Building and UREC Fitness Center?

A student must be enrolled in a minimum of one hour to use HPER building and UREC Fitness Center.

When can new students start using the HPER building and UREC Fitness Center?

One week prior to the start of classes.

Where can I find the normal building hours?

Normal Operating Hours can be found at: http://urec.uark.edu/7521.htm

Where can I find special holiday building hours?

Special Holiday Hours can also be found at the top of the Building Hours Page: http://urec.uark.edu/7521.htm

Are the HPER building and UREC Fitness Center open during home football/basketball game days?

The HPER building and UREC Fitness Center are closed for home football games. During home basketball games, the HPER building is open, but there may be limited parking.

Is the HPER building open during poor weather? What hours is it open?

UREC Inclement Weather Policy can be found at: http://imrs.uark.edu/6883.htm

What form of payments can I use to buy items/services at UREC?

The UREC main office, the UREC Fitness Center front desk, Service Center, Outdoor Connection Center, and UREC Sports Complex concession stand accept cash, check, Visa, Master Card, and Discover. The UREC Office and the UREC Fitness Center front desk accept payroll deduction (University Faculty and Staff Only) for membership, locker, and towel service fees.  Cost center numbers are accepted for departmental use only.

How do I apply for a job with UREC?

Look over the job descriptions and fill out an online application at: http://urec.uark.edu/2621.htm

Memberships

What are the semester terms for memberships?

Spring Semester runs from December 16th - May 15th

Summer Semester runs from May 15th - August 15th

Fall Semester runs from August 15th - December 15th

When can I renew my UREC membership?

You may renew your UREC membership anytime in the month before expiration.  For example, if your membership expires on December 1st, you may renew anytime in the month of November.  If your membership expires on August 15th, you may come in as early as July 1st to renew for the upcoming semester.

Why should I renew early?

By renewing early, you will save time waiting in long lines at the UREC main office or at the UREC Fitness Center front desk, and ensure that your membership and other services are ready to go for the winter break and spring semester.

How do I renew my UREC membership?

There are two options to renew your membership:

  • Come in to the UREC main office (HPER 225), located on the second floor or visit the UREC Fitness Center front desk in the Union on the second floor.
  • Call the UREC main office (HPER 225) at 479-575-4646.   Please note that call-in renewals require credit card payment over the phone and may not be available to members requiring proof of eligibility.

What is the cost to renew?

Cost varies by your eligibility; you can review our pricing information at: http://imrs.uark.edu/2575.htm (Section VII.)

What payment forms are accepted for membership renewals?

We accept cash, check, American Express, Visa, Master Card, Discover Card, and payroll deduction (if you qualify).

Great!  You offer payroll deduction, can I fax in a form to set that up?

No, payroll deduction requires you to come in person and complete a payroll deduction authorization form.  This authorization is required each time you'd like to renew your UREC membership.  TheUREC main office is open until 8 p.m. on weekdays and until 5 p.m. on weekends and the UREC Fitness Center front desk is open until 7 p.m. on weekdays (closed on weekends) to make it more convenient for you to come in.

How do I qualify for Payroll Deduction?

Simply be a 9 or 12 month appointed faculty or staff member, or a non-student hourly employee working 20 or more hours per week.

I have renewed my membership over the phone, am I all done?

Almost! Your membership and locker or other services are on "freeze" until you stop by the UREC main office or the UREC Fitness Center front desk to update your account and sign a membership agreement form. In some cases, if your photo is not on file, we will ask to take a photo for security purposes.

Why do you have to take my photo?

Yes. As of the spring 2009 semester, the UREC membership requires a photo on file. This is a new security measure that is in place for YOUR protection and benefit.

Can’t you just get my photo from my ISIS account?

No. At this time ISIS does not download photos directly into our system.

What happens if I don’t renew by my expiration date?

Memberships not renewed by 8:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. on weekends) or 7 p.m. at the UREC Fitness Center front desk on the date of expiration will not have access to the building after 11:50 p.m. that day until renewed. To continue your access, you must renew your membership. Membership renewals are available anytime the UREC main office (HPER 225) or the UREC Fitness Center front desk are open.

I have a locker; can I keep it so I don’t have to learn a new combination?

YES! This is a great example of why you should renew your UREC membership before it expires! Letting your locker expire will require you to have a new locker assigned.

What happens to my locker items if I do not renew by the expiration date?

Locker items are pulled on the day following your expiration.  For semester renewals, they are pulled on the 16th.  Once items have been pulled from expired lockers, they are bagged and stored for a  minimum period of 14 days.

Is there a fee to pick up my items after they have expired and been pulled?

Yes, we require a $10.00 storage fee to pick up any items that were left behind in an expired locker.

What happens to my locker items if I forget to pick them up during the 14 day holding period?

Items not retrieved are donated or discarded.

Will you contact me by phone to remind me to renew?

No, unfortunately we are not able to make reminder phone calls for semester renewals but we will send you a reminder email.  To receive a membership renewal email, we must have a correct email address on file.  Your email is not shared with anyone outside of UREC.

How do I get a membership if I am not a student?

We have several membership options available to non-students however, we require that you are affiliated with the University of Arkansas (Faculty, Staff, etc) or an active member of the Arkansas Alumni Association.

What sort of documentation is required to get a membership?

Students, faculty and staff should provide their University of Arkansas ID card. Arkansas Alumni Association members must provide a photo ID and an active Arkansas Alumni Association membership card.  You may register with them at their website or by calling 479-575-2801.  Spouses/Partners and their children age 15-26 must provide a photo ID to have a UREC family membership card printed at our office.

I am a student that is not enrolled in Summer classes. Can I still use the HPER building and UREC Fitness Center?

Yes, but you will be required to pay a fee at the UREC membership office (HPER 225) or at the UREC Fitness Center front desk for access until August 15th.  To qualify for a summer student membership, you must be pre-enrolled in the upcoming Fall semester and have attended classes the previous Spring semester.

I have a house guest visiting for a few weeks. Is there a membership option for them?

Yes, if you have a guest staying in your home and you are an active UREC member, you may pay a $20 fee for a four week membership. You may have more than one house guest but each house guest may only use ONE four week period per semester.  House guests must provide a photo ID and must be a guest in your home.  House guests must reside outside of the area.

How old does someone with a family membership have to be receive their own UREC Member ID?

You must be 15 years old to receive a UREC family membership ID card and will be required to show a photo ID to have your card printed.

Can I renew my membership online?

At this time, we do not have online membership renewals available. We hope to have online renewals in the near future.

Locker and Towel Services

I need to get a locker but the semester is almost over, do you pro-rate locker services?

No, our locker (and towel service) prices remain the same regardless of the date of purchase.

I need a full size locker, but your sign says there are only small size lockers available.  Why?

Lockers sell out quickly at the beginning of each semester.  Our most popular locker sizes are full and half size lockers and at times, they can sell out as quickly as a day or two into the semester.  Come in early and keep your locker renewed to ensure you have the size you would like.

I didn't empty out my locker before it expired. Is there a way to get my stuff back?

Possibly! We empty lockers and keep any items for a period of 14 days. During that time, you may pay a $10.00 fee and pick up any items left behind. After that time, items are donated or discarded.

I hear you have towel service, how does that work?

Towel service comes in two options.  You may purchase a towel daily each day you need one for $1.00 per day OR you may add the service to your membership for an additional $12.00 per semester.  Your towel service must match the term of your membership and you must have a locker to purchase towel service.  The towels are bath size and great for swimming or showering.

I need more than one towel, can I have two?

Yes!  Just add two towel services to your purchase.  Be sure and tell us you want two towels for yourself and we will make a note on the account.

Guest Passes

Where do I buy Guest Passes?

You may purchase a guest pass at the UREC main office (HPER 225) or at the HPER Service Center, located on the 2nd floor of the HPER building and also at the UREC Fitness Center front desk in the Union.

What information does my guest have to provide to get a guest pass?

We will ask for the first and last name of your guest, their telephone number and a person to contact in case of an emergency. Guests are welcome to provide additional information (such as address) for our records.

What is the cost per pass?

Guest passes are $5.00 each and you can bring up to 3 guests at one time.  Want a better deal?  Simply buy a 10 time pass for $40.

Can I show my ID and drop off my guest?

Why aren't some of the facilities in the HPER building handicap accessible?

Handicap accessibility is a campus-wide issue; however, we have made some progress in rectifying some of these problems. For instance, a ladder and accessible lift was purchased for the swimming pool and some of the faucets and lavatories in the bathrooms have been converted to acceptable standards. We have also made strides in providing fitness equipment that is accessible. Meanwhile, we continue addressing these issues to appropriate university committees and hope to keep on pursuing desired results.

Why are children under the age of 12 not allowed into the fitness center even if they are accompanied by an adult and young adults are not admitted in the building on their own?

Children under the age of 15 cannot be allowed into the building without adult supervision for reasons of responsibility. The same reason exists for the fitness centers - due to the amount of heavy machinery, young children are at risk of injury. In addition, weight lifting is not recommended for this age group, as it may interfere with their development and growth.
